University of Maine Deepwater Offshore Wind Test Site
The University of Maine Deepwater Offshore Wind Test Site is a two square mile, pre-permitted site located approximately three miles south of Monhegan Island. UMaine researchers will provide independent, third-party assessment of new deepwater turbine, platform, and foundation designs. DeepCwind Consortium members will simultaneously conduct geophysical, wind resource, and wave assessment.
Ecological monitoring is currently and will continue to be conducted at the site for the duration of research activity.
Offshore Wind Laboratory
The Offshore Wind Laboratory is an expansion to the existing Advanced Structures and Composites Center at UMaine. The building will include a nanocomposites laboratory, a large structural testing laboratory with a test stand capable of supporting a 70 meter wind blade, and space to accommodate faculty, staff, and graduate researchers.
